Abstract

As healthcare increasingly moves towards digital monitoring, the integration of blockchain technology with wearable devices presents both opportunities and challenges. While blockchain can improve data security and user control, there remains limited understanding of how to effectively design these systems. Through three interconnected projects, this research explores design challenges and opportunities in blockchain-based wearables for health monitoring. Using Research through Design and Research for Design methodologies, this research investigates a design toolkit for improving user acceptance, a smart fidget toy case study integrating blockchain technology, and design guidelines for blockchain applications. The research addresses trust issues in health data sharing while increasing blockchain adoption. The findings contribute to design theory by identifying key factors in blockchain integration and provide practical guidelines for balancing technical requirements with user needs in secure health monitoring solutions.
