La questione dell’“ambiente”. La tutela del paesaggio a Verona e la lezione di Piero Gazzola

The text examines the landscape heritage on the basis of the problems and interpretations that emerged during the destruction of the Second World War and the reconstruction, which highlighted the relevance of landscape assets as a context, historic city and landscape. The Venice Charter recognizes the importance of this type of heritage considered historical monuments, even if composed of ‘modest works’. The concept of landscape heritage changes and it becomes important to correctly identify its specific characteristics and its system of relationships. In this context Piero Gazzola, superintendent of Verona, applies the concept of landscape heritage to the historic city and its surrounding hills, recognizing them as elements of identity. To safeguard the landscape values of Verona, Gazzola worked to issue the landscape constraints of the hill (1956-66) and of the historic city (1965) to limit and govern urban expansion and building transformations, comparing protection and urban planning laws.
