Aluminium and its alloys are widely used in different applications, from aerospace to constructions, thanks to a combination of properties such as light weight, mechanical properties (strength) and ductility, high corrosion resistance. In atmospheric exposure aluminium is characterised by a good corrosion behaviour due to the ability to self protect by means of a surface oxide. Nevertheless, in very aggressive environments or in particular conditions, for example in marine exposure or in contact with other metallic materials, corrosion can occur, influencing both aesthetic and functional properties. In the paper the main corrosion morphologies of aluminium are described, with a focus on atmospheric environment, and the main methods of corrosion prevention and protection are briefly introduced.
L’alluminio e le sue leghe trovano applicazione in molti settori, da quello aeronautico a quello edilizio, grazie a una serie di proprietà tra le quali la leggerezza, la buona resistenza meccanica abbinata alla duttilità, l’elevata resistenza a corrosione. In atmosfera, l’alluminio offre un’ottima resistenza a corrosione grazie alla capacità di auto-proteggersi con un ossido superfi ciale. Tuttavia, in ambienti particolarmente aggressivi o in particolari condizioni di utilizzo, ad esempio in atmosfera marina o in presenza di contatto con altri materiali metallici, la corrosione si può manifestare infl uenzando l’estetica e la funzionalità del materiale. Nell’articolo sono descritte le principali forme di corrosione dell’alluminio, con particolare riferimento all’ambiente atmosferico, e si introducono i principali metodi di protezione e prevenzione.
