The contribution investigates the initial outcomes of the National Plan for Recovery and Resilience (PNRR), funded by the Next Generation Europe program, in terms of its impact on the built heritage. While the initiatives of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities within the PNRR are the only ones explicitly aimed at the preservation of cultural heritage, it is also true that many of the ongoing projects involve, to varying extents, both listed and unlisted historical buildings. Drawing upon observations from over two thousand cases, this essay seeks to conduct an initial screening of ongoing activities and assess their potential impact on architectural heritage. Due to the unavailability of detailed project information and relying solely on synthetic data, the evaluation aspires to outline various directions, highlighting potentialities and criticalities. However, a comprehensive assessment of outcomes and impacts is deferred to a later stage. After providing a general framework regarding the role played by heritage preservation in recent Italian policies for local development, the contribution focuses on quantitative and qualitative analyses of the projects funded during the initial stages of the PNRR, considering the type of heritage involved, the functions chosen for reuse, and the geographic distribution. Despite the program being ongoing and the collected data representing only partial results, the essay’s goal is to present a preliminary scenario regarding the direction of architectural heritage restoration strategies within such a crucial funding program.
