Abstract

At the 2nd international conference on Restoration held in Venice in 1964, it was expected to obtain a widely shared result due to the dozens of national delegations and various international organizations attending the event. Speakers were asked to contain their presentations to benefit the discussion, which was notoriously tense between Italians and North Americans who ultimately rejected the final document. Through their interventions, some memories and keeping under control the historiography which concerns both the protagonists and the Venetian Conference, the paper offers a portrait of the U.S. delegates to grasp their backgrounds and issues. Despite the circumstances and beyond the compelling reasons for the refusal, the aim is to identify convergences and promises that are still of relevance.
