Grain silos from the Thirties in Italy. Analysis, conservation and adaptive reuse

The book brings together the results of the first comprehensive study of the network of grain silos built in Italy during the 1930s following the institution of the so-called ‘ammassi collettivi’ (collective storage facilities). The mapping on a national scale, carried out through the analysis of bibliographic and archival sources, gives a picture of the granary production in Italy at the time, and testifies to the use of a modern architectural language and construction systems. Today, decommissioning and the difficulties of re-functionalisation have led these silos to become elements of urban decay. An understanding of the historical and architectural value of these silos is, therefore, a fundamental step in the definition of coherent guidelines for the conservation and reuse of this built heritage, which is still not properly recognised.

Il volume raccoglie gli esiti del primo organico studio sulla rete di sili granari realizzata in Italia negli anni Trenta a seguito dell’istituzione degli ammassi collettivi. La mappatura su scala nazionale, eseguita attraverso l’analisi di fonti bibliografiche e archivistiche, restituisce un quadro della produzione granaria dell’Italia al tempo, e testimonia l’impiego di un linguaggio architettonico e sistemi costruttivi moderni. La dismissione e le difficoltà di rifunzionalizzazione hanno portato questi sili a costituire oggi elementi di degrado urbano. La comprensione del valore storico-architettonico costituisce, quindi, un tassello fondamentale per la definizione di coerenti linee guida per la conservazione e il riuso di questo patrimonio, ancora non debitamente riconosciuto.
