Laggiù nell’Arizona. Archetipi e figurazione nelle architetture di Paolo Soleri

Paolo Soleri, unlike many European architects after the Second World War, chose to move to the Arizona desert in the United States. Though he was free from pre-existing conditions and the burden of history, Soleri still trusted certain ancestral architectural forms. He was constantly experimenting with new modes of settlement and construction. Even where there was no pre-existing built environment to contend with, the role of history in prefiguring the future city still resurfaced. The desert was, for him, a testing ground that did not escape the disciplinary domain of architecture.

Diversamente da molti architetti che operano nell’Europa del secondo dopoguerra, nel deserto dell’Arizona Soleri è libero dal condizionamento delle preesistenze. Nella sua costante tensione verso la sperimentazione di nuove modalità insediative e costruttive, Soleri sembra riporre una grande fiducia nell’ordine di alcune forme architettoniche ancestrali. Non c’è un ambiente costruito preesistente con il quale misurarsi, ma il ruolo propulsivo della storia nella prefigurazione della città futura riemerge comunque. Per questa via, il deserto non si sottrae al dominio disciplinare dell’architettura.
