Thermal imaging of buildings and historical structures of the diffuse historical heritage makes it possible to gather information regarding the building technology and elements, their shape, material characteristics, and state of decay. This information is invaluable for making preservation decisions that affect the long-term management and maintenance of the structure in question. This chapter reviews inspection procedures for various elements along with typical deteriorating conditions and issues that can be diagnosed through thermal imaging. Thermal imaging in different climatic conditions is discussed concerning the environmental conditions that affect the technique. Various case studies are presented for a comprehensive understanding of this very useful and economical tool.
