San Giorgio Bridge-Waterfronts. Symbols of the link between the city and water - The San Giorgio Bridge and the waterfronts are symbols of the link between the city and the water; they constitute a set of paths and areas with great potential for new quality public spaces and routes between the historic fabric and the territory. A mighty hydraulic landscape intervention conducted in the Middle Ages slowed down the waters of the Mincio river with cross dams, transforming the marshy areas into lakes surrounding the city. San Giorgio Bridge is one of these embankments and constitutes the historic entrance to the city, focused on the Ducal Palace. This system is still perceptible today, but spatially, it is very different from the past. The most significant problems are caused by the car traffic that conditions the use of the bridge and sacrifices the pedestrian path, channeled into a parallel and lowered seat than the vehicular one, which does not give the possibility of seeing both lakesides while walking. The grafting spaces are also marked by a fast-flowing road system and by the dissipation of green areas that still lack a clear, orderly design. The current situation, on the other hand, offers the possibility of achieving a linear park composed of squares, paths, landscapes and architectural elements connected to the context that would reinforce the connections with the main junction points in the urban fabric. Some recent interventions and projects denote this new attention to historical and environmental values.
Il Ponte di San Giorgio e i lungolaghi sono i simboli del legame tra la città e l’acqua; costituiscono un insieme di tracciati e aree che presentano un grande potenziale per nuovi spazi pubblici di qualità e percorsi tra il tessuto storico e il territorio. Un poderoso intervento idraulico-paesaggistico, condotto in epoca medievale, ha rallentato le acque del Mincio con sbarramenti trasversali, trasformando le aree paludose in laghi che circondano la città. Il Ponte di San Giorgio è uno di questi argini e costituisce l’ingresso storico alla città, focalizzato sul Palazzo Ducale. Tale sistema è ancora oggi percepibile, ma spazialmente è molto diverso rispetto al passato. Le maggiori problematiche sono originate dal traffico automobilistico che condiziona l’uso del ponte e sacrifica il percorso pedonale, incanalato in una sede parallela e ribassata rispetto a quella carrabile, che non dà la possibilità di vedere entrambi gli specchi lacustri camminando. Gli spazi di innesto risultano inoltre segnati da una viabilità di scorrimento veloce e dalla dissipazione delle aree a verde che mancano ancora di un chiaro disegno ordinatore. La situazione attuale offre invece la possibilità di realizzare un parco lineare composto da piazze, percorsi ed elementi paesaggistici e architettonici che, raccordati al contesto, rafforzerebbero le connessioni con i principali punti di innesto nel tessuto urbano. Alcuni recenti interventi e progetti denotano questa nuova attenzione verso i valori storici e ambientali.
