Antolini's contribution to the culture of Italian classicism is based on relevant archaeological studies, including the publications devoted between 1819 and 1822 to the Roman settlement of Velleia. On the investigations and surveys carried out at the site, Antolini leaves a rare handwritten and illustrated notebook and a collection of autograph drawings hitherto unnoticed by the literature. Travel diary, journal of surveys, and sketchbook, the notebook reflects the articulate figure of Antolini: an architect-engineer, passionate archaeologist, and Enlightenment-inspired scientist. It also testifies to his personal journey through the culture of the time. This essay proposes a reflection on the theme of the survey of ancient monuments and the approach to the archeological data testified by the documents.
