The contribution aims to highlight the elements of innovation and challenges for city-regions hosting mega-events through the Milan case study. The chapter introduces the city-regional transition to knowledge economy, in which the Milan mega-events take place, and it depicts the planning process of the Expo 2015 and its multiple legacies: from the post-event transformation of the exhibition site to the regeneration of the urban core, up to the awarding of the Winter Olympics 2026 in cooperation with Alpine regions. This sequence of world events and grand projects confirms long-term trajectory and growing territorial scale of intertwined, ordinary and extra-ordinary, spatial planning strategies.
