With a focus on Villa Adriana, this contribution takes into consideration the territory and the landscape of Tivoli, which Via Tiburtina Valeria Claudia and the Aniene River connected with Rome. Here rural villas and places of worship were to be found long before Villa Adriana was built. They grafted onto the soil in both constructive and architectural terms, exploiting topography to host the agricultural and pastoral activities practiced at the time. The resulting historical-topographical palimpsest remained almost unchanged over the centuries, eventually subverted by recent urban planning. Mobility infrastructures are an integral part of the definition of landscape as classically understood, in functional, symbolic, and cultural terms. Along this line of thought, a recent design-oriented research project is here presented, aimed at extolling the site-specific relationship between old and new, nature and artifice, infrastructure and the buildings, which has qualified the Tivoli area since antiquity.

Abstract
Along this line of thought, a recent design-oriented research project is here presented, aimed at extolling the site-specific relationship between old and new, nature and artifice, infrastructure and the buildings, which has qualified the Tivoli area since antiquity.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
