Under the conditions of ever-increasing uncertainty that characterize E&C companies, particular attention must be paid to the quality of the investment cost estimate made during the feasibility phase. Obtaining a reliable initial accuracy equates to having better risk mitigation and consequently a robust estimate of profit indicators. This study is aimed at the expert Piping & Layout designer who develops the initial, high-level design for process plants with the aim of creating, as the final result, a more reliable project cost estimate. The study highlights the potential of using a simple methodology for the revision of an existing procedure, and of the use of tools, such as databases and 3D CAD, equally effective in introducing a systematic use of the company’s intrinsic know-how, contained in its know-how of completed projects, in order to increase the robustness of the process of technical estimation and selection of the primary concept in initial engineering phases without an extension of the timescales. Ultimately, this will result in obtaining a reduction in the risk component of the investment thanks to a more accurate economic-financial evaluation.
