The paper analyses the management plans applied to historic parks and gardens as a coordination tool for conservation and management. The need to plan conservation activities for historic gardens is well known. Only recently has a debate started on how to structure a management plan for historic gardens. In the Italian context, for example, just the World Heritage List sites have a regulated management plan. The English experience of the Royal Parks of London can be useful to be analyzed because its management plans have been drawn up and used for at least thirty years. The Management Plan has a ten-year duration and is structured in compliance with the Conservation Principles and it is divided into four parts: the description of the reference context (managerial, regulatory, historical, environmental and social) and the strategic objectives to be achieved; the division into areas and evaluation of their conservation status; actions corresponding to the objectives set; the arrangements for implementing the plan, through specific projects with a timetable, and updating. Thanks to this experience emerges a model of Management Plan that guarantees continuity to the management action and that can be a useful reference for the methodological definition of the tool and to address some of the problems present in Italian historical gardens, as regards the definition of long-term strategies, the appropriate planning of interventions and the coordination of actors and stakeholders.
