This article aims to explore the potential of the ‘social ontology’ approach in urban studies. The reference will be, in particular, to the works of the philosopher of language and of the mind John Searle. First, the fundamental ontology proposed by Searle will be presented; the attention will be placed, in particular, on the distinction between various types of ‘facts’ (brute, social and institutional facts) and on the methodological implications that derive from it for the analysis of urban phenomena. From this point of view, the problem of the abandonment of buildings in urban areas will be critically reconsidered and the possible consequences of this approach for urban planning and policies will be illustrated.

Abstract
This article aims to explore the potential of the ‘social ontology’ approach in urban studies. The reference will be, in particular, to the works of the philosopher of language and of the mind John Searle. First, the fundamental ontology proposed by Searle will be presented; the attention will be placed, in particular, on the distinction between various types of ‘facts’ (brute, social and institutional facts) and on the methodological implications that derive from it for the analysis of urban phenomena. From this point of view, the problem of the abandonment of buildings in urban areas will be critically reconsidered and the possible consequences of this approach for urban planning and policies will be illustrated.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
