The contribution investigates the relationship between territorial and urban morphological analysis, and the role of local communities in shaping design perspectives within fragile and marginal areas. Specifically, the essay focuses on the inner area of the Central Apennines as a case study to address a critical reflection on the re- lationship concerning spatial modifications and community practices as necessary elements in the transformation of the territories. The context influenced massively the territorial readings, where fragile mountain areas could be framed as thick borders whose project, metabolism, and form, impact the urban systems. Through the study of the BorghiIN Network, we intend to illustrate a possible path that combines the needs of community cooperatives and the morphological reading of the territory, capable of activating a process of place-based territorial transformations. The experience of the network of BorghiIN Community Cooperatives is devel- oped starting from the close connection between community practices and local actors, in which communities assume the role of promoters and enhancers of the territories. The goal is to iden- tify in the morphological understanding of these places and in the communities’ activities the core for a project perspective, capable of envi- sioning territorial transformation.
