Abstract

In the framework of Environmental Sustainability the research aims at investigating how urban-scale processes can affect the spatial configuration of a territory, its morphology and the definition of public space armatures. The urban region of Varese is considered to outline a strategic mapping of possible focuses at the architectural and urban design scale. This methodology, which involved the Municipality of Varese and many other stakeholders, also gave structure to University Studio design Courses. Varese heterogeneous and polycentric urban morphology has grown in relation to the topography. The proposed design scheme aims to question this pattern by overlapping, on the existing infrastructures, three parallel and continuous bands that transversely connect the main hydrographic basins. Elaborating on the notion of Green Infrastructure, these bands, namely the “Decumani Verdi”, claim the vertebrating role of a system of spaces that "retroactively" structure a complex urban morphology at the human scale.
