This contribution is made up of two parts: the first places the Via Egnatia in geo-historical context, whereas the second outlines an itinerary along the Via Egnatia from Thessaloniki to Giannitsa. The Via Egnazia, built as a long-distance extension of the Via Appia, reached the port of Thessaloniki, forming the backbone of its urban structure. After the arrival of refugees from Asia Minor (1923) the coastal plain of Macedonia faced fast-paced resettlement followed by major hydraulic works. In this process, challenged by a difficult balance between resources and time, the Via Egnazia resumed a decisive role, not only for the logistics of refugee settlement and reclamation works but also for reviving the ancient memory of places and fostering a new collective identity

Abstract
This contribution is made up of two parts: the first places the Via Egnatia in geo-historical context, whereas the second outlines an itinerary along the Via Egnatia from Thessaloniki to Giannitsa. The Via Egnazia, built as a long-distance extension of the Via Appia, reached the port of Thessaloniki, forming the backbone of its urban structure. After the arrival of refugees from Asia Minor (1923) the coastal plain of Macedonia faced fast-paced resettlement followed by major hydraulic works. In this process, challenged by a difficult balance between resources and time, the Via Egnazia resumed a decisive role, not only for the logistics of refugee settlement and reclamation works but also for reviving the ancient memory of places and fostering a new collective identityFile | Dimensione | Formato | |
