Strade, paesaggi, architettura. Attualità di una linea di lavoro

The idea of roads has been an important aspect of Modern Movement architecture. Le Corbusier identified two dimensions of roads: they connect human settlements and functional areas, provide scenic views, and serve as an ordering element for human activities. After the Second World War, reconstruction became a priority and roads became a catalyst for collective living in many European cities. Ancient roads were the founding acts that led to the creation of architectural works and new settlements. Long-distance roads have left their mark on cities and geographic spaces, becoming territorial strongholds for the architectures they have seeded. This issue explores several ancient roads and long-distance routes that have either maintained or lost significance. These roads and spaces have preserved buildings that complement the exchange dynamics. By comparing some of these cases, we can understand the relationship between the historical landscape and its projection towards the future. In this transition, ancient roads have often represented a symbolic resource. Questioning the concept of heritage as a ‘latent order’ awaiting future interpretations transcends the dichotomy between new and old.

Quello della strada è stato un tema importante per l'architettura del Movimento Moderno, che Le Corbusier ha saputo declinare a diverse scale. Dopo la Seconda guerra mondiale, quando la ricostruzione era una priorità in molte città europee, le strade sono tornate a catalizzare la vita collettiva. Riconsiderando storicamente il rapporto tra strada e insediamento, si può aggiungere che molte strade dell’antichità furono veri e propri atti fondativi, che hanno lasciato un’impronta profonda nel corpo delle città e dei relativi spazi geografici, definendo caposaldi architettonici di respiro territoriale. A partire da questa consapevolezza il paesaggio storico può essere inteso come "ordine latente" in attesa di future reinterpretazioni.
