The 8th European Thermal Sciences Conference was held virtually from the 20th to the 22nd September 2021. It was chaired by Professor Pedro Coelho, from Instituto Superior T´ecnico, University of Lisbon, Portugal. This was the eighth Conference of this series organized under the auspices of the EUROTHERM Committee (http://www.eurotherm committee.eu/). Previous conferences were held in Birmingham (1992), Rome (1996), Heidelberg (2000), Birmingham (2004), Eind hoven (2008), Poitiers (2012) and Krakow (2016). The conference was aimed at promoting and encouraging European cooperation in thermal sciences and heat transfer by bringing together scientists and engineers working in specialized areas. The conference topics included both fundamental and applied topics on all areas of heat and mass transfer. All submitted papers were peer reviewed, and 130 papers were accepted for presentation at the conference (116 for oral presentation and 14 for poster presentation). The contributed oral presentations were organized in 24 sessions that were scheduled in blocks of three parallel sessions. In addition, eight state-of-the-art keynote lectures were delivered by world leading experts. The present special issue includes thirteen extended versions of some of the best research papers presented at the conference along with one review paper and one vision paper. All the papers in this special issue were peer reviewed following the standard procedure in Applied Thermal Engineering.
