Usually, scholars are determining three main classes of impact craters: simple, complex, and meteoric basins, where the main differences are in the crater size but also the geomorphological features. It is assumed that in most of the cases simple craters are exhibiting simple bowl shape of the cavity unless modified by external factors, e.g. landslides. More complex features are notable when the crater size is becoming bigger. However, upon investigation, more complicated and asymmetric shapes were noted to be present in already categorized simple craters. In this work is proposed a general subdivision classification of the simple craters based on their elevation profile shapes.

Abstract

Usually, scholars are determining three main classes of impact craters: simple, complex, and meteoric basins, where the main differences are in the crater size but also the geomorphological features. It is assumed that in most of the cases simple craters are exhibiting simple bowl shape of the cavity unless modified by external factors, e.g. landslides. More complex features are notable when the crater size is becoming bigger. However, upon investigation, more complicated and asymmetric shapes were noted to be present in already categorized simple craters. In this work is proposed a general subdivision classification of the simple craters based on their elevation profile shapes.
