NEST Project. Focus on Milanese polytechnic design culture in Argentina since 2nd Postwar

The essay documents the results of the NEST Project, an initiative of the ABC Department of the Politecnico di Milano, aimed at promoting the internationalization of research through the formation of a mixed working group, made up of professors, PhD students, and ICAR SSD research fellows/ 17 and ICAR/18, in synergy with a Visiting Researcher, professor at the Universidad de Belgrano in Buenos Aires. The research carried out focused on the mutually influencing relationships between different design cultures, resulting from the professional and academic experiences of designers - engineers, architects and industrial designers - trained in the Politecnico di Milano, working in Argentina from the second post-war period onwards. Among the prominent figures participating in this exchange - testified by a rich documentary heritage, unfortunately fragmented and dispersed in different archives, public and private, in Italy and abroad – the paper analyzes the experiences of: Ernesto Nathan Rogers and his seminars at the Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tucuman; Marco Zanuso and the Argentine Olivetti network of which Gae Aulenti was also a member; Maurizio Mazzocchi his project activity, between academia and profession.

Il saggio documenta gli esiti del Progetto NEST, un’iniziativa del Dipartimento ABC del Politecnico di Milano, finalizzata a promuovere l’internazionalizzazione della ricerca attraverso la formazione di un gruppo di lavoro misto, formato da docenti, dottorandi, e assegnisti dei SSD ICAR/17 e ICAR/18, in sinergia con un Visiting Researcher, docente dell’Universidad de Belgrano a Buenos Aires. La ricerca si è incentrata sui rapporti di reciproca influenza tra differenti culture del progetto, scaturiti dalle esperienze professionali e accademiche compiute da progettisti -ingegneri, architetti e designers - di formazione politecnica milanese, operanti in Argentina dal secondo dopoguerra in poi. Fra le figure di grande spicco partecipi di questo scambio –testimoniato da un ricco patrimonio documentale, purtroppo frammentato e disperso in archivi diversi, pubblici e privati, in Italia e all’estero - sono state analizzate le esperienze di: Ernesto Nathan Rogers e i suoi seminari all’Istituto di Architettura e Urbanistica di Tucuman; Marco Zanuso e la rete olivettiana argentina di cui fece parte anche Gae Aulenti; Maurizio Mazzocchi la sua attività progettuale tra accademia e professione.
