The Typological programme is a research contribution to the seminar “VKhUTEMAS 100. Space, project, teaching” held at the Doctoral School of the IUAV in 2020-202, in collaboration with those institutions in Moscow which inherited the VKhUTEMAS’ intellectual legacy. New names are required. New types are needed. The new VKhUTEMAS Museum is a type of building which arguably does not exist yet, and must be defined using new names and new types. It is an archive, but the works are stored among different institutions. It is a museum, but it has no permanent collection of its own. It is an exhibition centre, for works and research results. It is a study and research centre, a library and documentation centre. It is a school for the applied arts, inspired by a cultural development which differs from that of art academies and architecture schools. It is a “palace of art”, meaning a building which includes different parts, but without claiming to have exhausted its role within the city. It is a “campus of the arts”, composed of different parts or buildings, for a new teaching and research arts community.
