It includes cultural and participation initiatives compatible with the sites’ historical, architectural and landscape layout; meets the needs of the contemporary urban and social fabric; and is based on shared choices, to make the stakeholders be more aware and effective and "take care”.

Abstract

Public historic gardens are often considered and presented as ordinary green areas, encouraging users to view them on a par with recreational spaces rather than as places of culture. In the long run, such a management proves ineffective, unsustainable and rarely respectful of the intrinsic value of the site. This paper refers the experience of the ReGiS network which, in collaboration with several public administrations, has defined a medium-long term management strategy to support the development of gardens as stratified and constantly changing artefacts, recognize and respect their value as Cultural Heritage and works of Landscape Architecture, and propose new values and functions. It includes cultural and participation initiatives compatible with the sites’ historical, architectural and landscape layout; meets the needs of the contemporary urban and social fabric; and is based on shared choices, to make the stakeholders be more aware and effective and "take care”.
