The more complex planning problems are, the less treatable they appear, leading to immobility or the proliferation of uncoordinated divergent actions. The article, part of a wider research work around the case of the Old Town of Taranto, identifies conceptual and interpretative instruments to translate the possibilist approach into the planning process. In particular, the suggestion is to focus the attention on the resources and opportunities already present in the context. Using the concepts of ‘boundary object’ and ‘trading zone’, from these resources it is proposed to look for possible spaces of convergence on the border between different interests as starting points for change. Following Hirschman’s thought, a photographic contribution at the end accounts for an exploration of Taranto to imagine a future recovery of the city.
