Environmental (art) design is a discipline of research and practice that continues to be active in China with a large number of people studying and working. However, the environmental (art) design profession has always had multiple "dilemmas" such as confusion of professional names, broad content and positioning, and lack of core competitiveness. In the context of emerging design idea transformation, this paper conducts a comparative study of the Tsinghua-Polimi double degree program to gain experience and inspiration from the two countries' education system, development and history of the discipline. It is concluded that the discipline development is premised on reaching a "basic consensus" in the academic community and shifting the design paradigm from "indoor + outdoor design" to "creation + non-creation design". Finally, the authors call on the academic community to jointly build a "community with a shared future for environmental design."
