VON DER URBAN VILLA ZUR VORSTÄDTISCHEN VILLA DALLA URBAN VILLA ALLA VILLA SUBURBANA

The intention of this Quaderno di Aión is to continue the investigation of recent projects by German architects starting from a theme and a typology. If a previous volume analysed some interventions on German historical centres that make use of the block house type in different scales and contexts, this one presents projects that deal with the theme of the villa, both with respect to the tradition of the single-family house, and to its reuse as a residence destined for several units, as introduced since the '70s as a form of living in the city. The aim is not to provide a historical retrospective on the topics, nor an overview of the different possibilities for interpreting it from different positions and conceptions of architecture and the city, but rather to indicate a precise line of research that shares ideas and references drawn from a certain sphere of architectural history, however independently interpreted by the individual authors presented here. The projects, which date from around the beginning of the new millennium to the immediate present - several of which are still in progress or in the process of completion - are united by a relationship of continuity with their historical experience, in particular that of Berlin, the city where most of these architects live and work. This experience is based on certain cornerstones of the architecture of the villa of the first decades of the last century, through which a continuity is confirmed with the classic line of German architecture, starting with Gilly and Schinkel and some other protagonists of German neoclassicism, but also with the research of the Landhaus linked to the rural tradition and examples of English architecture.

L’intenzione di questo Quaderno di Aión è quello di proseguire l’indagine su progetti recenti di architetti tedeschi a partire da un tema e una tipologia. Se in un precedente volume sono stati analizzati alcuni interventi sui centri storici tedeschi che fanno uso del tipo della casa a blocco in diverse scale e contesti, questo presenta progetti che si sono confrontati con il tema della villa, sia rispetto alla tradizione della casa unifamiliare, che al suo riuso come residenza destinata a più unità abitative, come introdotta a partire dagli anni ’70 come forma di abitare in città. L’obbiettivo non è quello di restituire una retrospettiva storica sul tema, né una panoramica sulle diverse possibilità di declinare il tema a partire da posizioni e concezioni differenti sull’architettura e la città, ma di indicare piuttosto una precisa linea di ricerca che condivide idee e riferimenti tratti da un certo ambito della storia dell’architettura, per quanto interpretata autonomamente dai singoli autori qui presentati. I progetti, che vanno circa dall’inizio del nuovo millennio sino all’immediato presente – essendo diversi di questi ancora in fieri o in stato di completamento –, sono accomunati da un rapporto di continuità con l’esperienza storica, in particolare quella berlinese, città in cui la maggior parte di questi architetti risiedono e operano. Un’esperienza che si fonda su alcuni capisaldi dell’architettura della villa dei primi decenni del secolo scorso, attraverso i quali si conferma a sua volta una continuità con quella linea classica dell’architettura tedesca, a partire da Gilly e Schinkel e alcuni altri protagonisti del neoclassicismo tedesco, ma anche con la ricerca della Landhaus legata alla tradizione rurale e agli esempi dell’architettura inglese.
