On April 7, 1967, the photographic exhibition Italia da salvare, promoted by the Touring Club Italiano and Italia Nostra, was inaugurated at Palazzo Reale in Milan. The exhibition denounced the state of abandonment and decay of Italian monuments and works of art, as well as the damages of historic urban fabrics and natural landscapes. The event also aimed to raise public awareness of the urgency of new laws, cataloging initiatives and preservation actions, as well as of urban plans devoted to the conservation of the ancient centers and the landscape. The essay reconstructs the long gestation of the exhibition, analyzing, thanks to the unpublished documentation preserved in the historical archive of the Touring Club Italiano, the relationships between the two associations and the role played in the organization of the initiative, which was part of a rich and lively national debate on these issues, developed between the 1950s and the 1960s, to which the Touring had given its contribution thanks, above all, to the articles published in the magazine «Le Vie d’Italia».

Abstract
On April 7, 1967, the photographic exhibition Italia da salvare, promoted by the Touring Club Italiano and Italia Nostra, was inaugurated at Palazzo Reale in Milan. The exhibition denounced the state of abandonment and decay of Italian monuments and works of art, as well as the damages of historic urban fabrics and natural landscapes. The event also aimed to raise public awareness of the urgency of new laws, cataloging initiatives and preservation actions, as well as of urban plans devoted to the conservation of the ancient centers and the landscape. The essay reconstructs the long gestation of the exhibition, analyzing, thanks to the unpublished documentation preserved in the historical archive of the Touring Club Italiano, the relationships between the two associations and the role played in the organization of the initiative, which was part of a rich and lively national debate on these issues, developed between the 1950s and the 1960s, to which the Touring had given its contribution thanks, above all, to the articles published in the magazine «Le Vie d’Italia».File | Dimensione | Formato | |
