Da Cozens a Pane. Cupole maiolicate della Costiera amalfitana tra immagine e conservazione

: The brief iconographic excursus here presented devoted to the Amalfi Coast clearly shows how majolica-cladded domes have always played a rather important role as territorial landmarks within this natural and urban landscape. In all Romantic paintings of the 19th century and the photographic images of the 20th century, domes’ centrality has always been observable as a permanent feature, despite the actual authenticity of their claddings, anyhow hardly identifiable at great distances. In fact, in the past decades several interventions have been carried out on domes, some of which have extensively replaced or even destroyed ancient tiles while others just derived by practices of pure invention. Though undermining this fragile heritage’s original material and image, on a large-scale these interventions have given domes a plausible outward appearance, which has perhaps determined a delay in undertaking a serious policy against such procedures.
