This article considers the historiography of the evolution of Roman North Africa in Late Antiquity and highlights how the original approach to this topic, initiated by Yves Modéran’s monograph, Les Maures et l’Afrique romaine (IV-VIIe siècle), influenced the contemporary scholarly debate. Additionally, this article’s focus on the interrelations of Romans, Afri, and Mauri as a category to understand the changes that occurred in the Late Antique African society provides the possibility of shedding light on mobility along the Roman frontiers in the pre-Saharan environment.

Abstract
