The concept of site-specific architecture and urban design stems in part from the important contribution of Milanese architects to the history of architecture in the '50s, sedimented in the tradition of the Milan school of architecture of the Politecnico di Milano, which emphasizes the properties of the place itself as a starting point and core of the design action, configuring the new architecture in dialectic with it. Through an overview of the origins and development of this design philosophy, through the analysis of three case studies of architecture and neighbourhood renewal in Milan, and through the experience of the ARS Lab of the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies at Politecnico di Milano, this paper explores the value and application of site-specific design concepts and methods in a contemporary sense and in a post-epidemic era. It is argued that the essence of site-specific architecture and urban regeneration is the relationship between people and the past, the present and the future, and that place is the starting point for establishing this dialectical relationship, which is shaped in the form, in the building material and in the phenomenological nature of architecture.
