This study explores how firms govern openness in the development of their collaborative open innovation relationships and digital platforms. We conducted an in-depth single case study of a digital platform development resulting from an open innovation collaboration between a firm and a big science center specializing in artificial intelligence. Findings show that the governance of the open innovation collaboration and the digital platform are intertwined through a boundary organization managing the tensions between the firm and the big science center. Based on these insights we develop implications for governing openness in digital platforms and open innovation in the context of collaborating with a big science center.

Abstract
This study explores how firms govern openness in the development of their collaborative open innovation relationships and digital platforms. We conducted an in-depth single case study of a digital platform development resulting from an open innovation collaboration between a firm and a big science center specializing in artificial intelligence. Findings show that the governance of the open innovation collaboration and the digital platform are intertwined through a boundary organization managing the tensions between the firm and the big science center. Based on these insights we develop implications for governing openness in digital platforms and open innovation in the context of collaborating with a big science center.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
