Giancarlo De Carlo e Spazio e Società. Una prospettiva civile, culturale e professionale

Giancarlo De Carlo and Space & Society. A civil, cultural and professional perspective ‘Space & Society’ was and remains a unique and peculiar magazine in the panorama of the Italian and international architectural and urban planning culture. It was born in 1978 as the Italian edition of the French quarterly human and social science magazine ‘Espaces et Sociétés’ founded in 1970 by Henri Lefebvre e Anatole Kopp. Since then ‘Space & Society’ was published in Italy until 2000 under the direction of Giancarlo De Carlo. Today, twenty years after the magazine closed, it seems to be possible to grasp some characters of absolute originality of ‘Space and Society’ with respect to those years and today cultural debate. Through a re-reading of its editorial and cultural history, this article gives direct voice to Giancarlo De Carlo’s thoughts about ‘Space & Society’, its controverted nature, role and mission.
