Design processes and practice represent the basis of theoretical and reflective thinking in its cultural, disciplinary and applied (practical) dimension. The phenomenological approach characterizes every action of Design: through the creation of artefacts (tangible and intangible) and the analysis of the corresponding design process, a new theoretical and critical vision is generated. The current post-industrial context has formed the attitude of Design to overcome barriers between disciplines. Based on the experience gained in the De_FORMA research, related to the collaboration and contamination between bio-fabrication and Digital Fabrication processes, this paper proposes a projective reading of the contribution of Design as a holistic discipline in the redefinition of materialisation and production processes. Thanks to the use of Digital Fabrication as an enabler for the construction of ecosystems for the cultivation of Growing Materials, we want to explore the possibility of constructing an experimental and flexible production system that enables the integration of formal choices, surface/ aesthetic treatments and additional elements, utilizing zero waste processes. The De_FORMA project, of which preliminary research premises and results are presented, is a framework for investigating issues related to the new places of collaborative and interdisciplinary knowledge generation, and to the new possible dimensions that the multi-faceted designer and the project will be able to assume within this recombinatory process. The design activity carried out constitutes that reflective practice that allows to figure out the possible futures for Design Research and Practice.
I processi e la pratica progettuale rappresentano per il Design la base del proprio pensiero teorico e riflessivo, nella dimensione culturale, disciplinare e progettuale. L’approccio fenomenologico caratterizza ogni azione di Design: attraverso la creazione di artefatti e lo studio del corrispondente processo progettuale, viene generata una nuova visione teorica e critica. L’attuale contesto post-industriale ha alimentato l’attitudine del Design a superare le barriere tra le discipline. Sulla base dell’esperienza maturata nell’ambito della ricerca De_FORMA, relativa alla collaborazione e contaminazione tra i processi di bio-fabbricazione e Digital Fabrication, il presente contributo propone una lettura proiettiva dell’apporto del Design come disciplina olistica nella ridefinizione di processi materializzativi e produttivi. Grazie all’utilizzo della Digital Fabrication come abilitatore alla costruzione di ecosistemi per la coltura dei Growing Materials, si vuole esplorare la possibilità di costruire un sistema di produzione sperimentale e flessibile, che consenta di integrare a priori scelte formali, trattamenti superficiali/estetici ed elementi addizionali, in una logica zero waste e più in generale di sostenibilità. La ricerca De_FORMA, di cui si presentano premesse e risultati preliminari, è un pretesto per approfondire tematiche relative ai nuovi luoghi di generazione di conoscenza collaborativa e interdisciplinare, e alle dimensioni possibili che il progettista multiforme e il progetto potranno assumere in questo processo ricombinatorio. L’attività progettuale svolta costituisce quella prassi riflessiva che consente di figurare dei futuri esistibili per la ricerca e la pratica del Design.
