his paper is aimed to highlight the characteristics, the research experiences and the reuse projects affecting the Cold War military properties in Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region. The Friuli territory, in the Italian North-eastern border territory, for historical and geopolitical reasons, has been the scene of the three great conflicts during the twentieth century marking indelibly its evolution (First and Second World War, Cold War). Specifically, in order to highlight the importance of the testimony offered by the Friuli war landscapes as a testimonial value of the memory of a war conflict, as well as a resource in architectural and urban planning terms, it is proposed the analysis of a specific case study. This is one of the largest barracks in Italy, the “Trieste” of Casarsa della Delizia (Pordenone), about 235,000 square meters of surface in a state of neglect and degradation since more than twenty years. Through an international interdisciplinary workshop, since 2015 an attempt has been promoting to reopen the enclosure that separates the military world from civil society as an effort in terms of design by the Politecnico di Milano in order to establish a participatory collaboration between the municipal administration, the Agenzia del Demanio and the Ministry of Defence, in addition to the potentially interested stakeholders.
