Asnago e Vender. il disegno e la città

In Milan, Asnago and Vender have been great designers of buildings, in many cases included in noble and ancient parts of the urban fabric, but above all they have been designers of façades. Façades in the most proper and highest sense of the term, on one side collecting a feature of the city and reinterpreting it, and on the other bringing it into their own architecture and making it an essential element of the building. The one of the façade is a difficult topic to handle within the contemporary architectural debate. Today the façade is often reduced to the image, the surface, or even to the energetic performance of the building, subtracting it from its compositional and architectural dimension, to its design. But it is clear that the façade is much more and much else than this, it is a non-separable part of the architectural organism and indeed it is the part that builds the relationship between interior and exterior, between the building and the street. The façade is the face, so the element that reveals the personality of the building, it presents the building on the stage of the city.

Mario Asnago (Barlassina 1896 - Monza 1981) e Claudio Vender (Milano 1904 - Saronno 1986) sono stati a Milano grandi costruttori di edifici, in molti casi inseriti in parti nobili e antiche del tessuto urbano, ma soprattutto sono stati costruttori di facciate. Facciate nel senso più proprio e alto del termine, raccogliendo da un lato un carattere della città e reinterpretandolo e dall’altra portandolo dentro la loro architettura e facendone un elemento di struttura della costruzione. Il tema della facciata è un tema difficile da affrontare dentro il discorso d’architettura contemporaneo. La facciata è oggi spesso ridotta all’immagine, alla superficie, o addirittura alla performance energetica dell’edificio, sottraendola alla sua dimensione compositiva e architettonica, al suo disegno. Ma è chiaro che la facciata è molto di più e molto altro da questo, è una parte non separabile dell’organismo architettonico e anzi ne è la parte che costruisce il rapporto tra interno ed esterno, tra l’edificio e la strada. La facciata è la faccia, dunque l’elemento che svela il carattere della costruzione, che mette in scena l’edificio sul palcoscenico della città.
