This chapter presents the fundamental operating principles of fuel cells, evidencing the differences with respect to traditional thermodynamic cycles and to other electrochemical devices. The various types of fuel cell are presented, classified by electrolyte materials, operating temperatures, and application fields. Main research and development challenges are discussed, followed by some examples of new and existing applications.
