Reflections between image and sound: a joint retrospect on Velazquez's "Las Meninas" and Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas"

The aim of this research is to show how the geometric structure can inextricably develop the multi-faceted meaning and aesthetic value of works of art. To that end, geometric and graphic features of Velazquez's "Las Meninas" and the formal organization of the song "Ah! Belinda, I am press'd with torment" from Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas" are taken into analysis. Moreover, deepening with the same methodology a painting and a musical work from a geometrical point of view and underlining the similarities, it will be shown how a two-dimensional layout is for both an essential medium for representing and understanding some of their presumable core meanings.
