A three-year research/teaching project at the Politecnico di Milano School of Design probes the students’ ability to imagine the future. The project aims at designing environments suitable for urban lifestyles in twenty years’ time. The research integrates disciplinary and extra-disciplinary methodologies so as to extend the conceptual tools of interior design. The projects combine scenario hypotheses (climate change, technologies, social behaviours) with specific urban living themes and are returned through exemplary models of internal settings; a manner that characterizes the speculative investigation of Italian design. The experience brings together a set of proposals that are anything but visionary; the result of a new optimistic generation that is not inclined towards utopia.
