The paper aims to highlight the close relationship among a historical monument, its frequent surveys over the centuries and their accuracy as useful information for researchers and technical experts involved in the relative restoration or reconstruction works. The study presents some comparisons between existing maps/drawings and recent 3D measurement with digital techniques of the Santa Maria delle Grazie church (Milano). Final aims are to i) understand the correctness of the historical documentation and update technical drawings, ii) identify the architectonic transformations and iii) using 3D modeling as a database for possible semantically-enriched representations.

Abstract

The paper aims to highlight the close relationship among a historical monument, its frequent surveys over the centuries and their accuracy as useful information for researchers and technical experts involved in the relative restoration or reconstruction works. The study presents some comparisons between existing maps/drawings and recent 3D measurement with digital techniques of the Santa Maria delle Grazie church (Milano). Final aims are to i) understand the correctness of the historical documentation and update technical drawings, ii) identify the architectonic transformations and iii) using 3D modeling as a database for possible semantically-enriched representations.
