The existing building stock refurbishment is a crucial aspect in reducing the energy demand of the built environment, often characterized by low performance envelopes. The paper presents a review on the main issues, constraints and strategies for the energy, architectural and performance refurbishment of existing building façades, showing their application through some significant case studies, where innovative technical solutions have been used. In this regard, the research focuses on specific recurring issues in refurbishment projects, such as: redefinition of the façades main technological details, integration of existing solutions lacking in terms of thermal insulation performance in relation to the current standard levels, architectural constraints that prevent from operating from the outside on the façades, fire safety, etc., giving at the same time a guideline and a systematic methodology that can be used conveniently in other similar case studies.

Abstract
The existing building stock refurbishment is a crucial aspect in reducing the energy demand of the built environment, often characterized by low performance envelopes. The paper presents a review on the main issues, constraints and strategies for the energy, architectural and performance refurbishment of existing building façades, showing their application through some significant case studies, where innovative technical solutions have been used. In this regard, the research focuses on specific recurring issues in refurbishment projects, such as: redefinition of the façades main technological details, integration of existing solutions lacking in terms of thermal insulation performance in relation to the current standard levels, architectural constraints that prevent from operating from the outside on the façades, fire safety, etc., giving at the same time a guideline and a systematic methodology that can be used conveniently in other similar case studies.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
