The work focuses on the main results obtained in a recent research devoted to the seismic vulnerability of public museums set in historical buildings. The project, promoted by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, was addressed to the application of a methodology, proposed in specific Guidelines, dealing with the safety of architectural heritage located in seismic areas. A multidisciplinary approach was adopted to point out the various building characteristics that would affect the seismic behaviour, bringing to a robust safety evaluation; the use of a planned diagnostic strategy based on non-destructive tests is highlighted here as a powerful tool for identifying the resources of the buildings in a seismic event.
