Abstract
The operation of illuminating a space requires familiarity with a number of elements. First of all, the intended use of the space; and then, the applicable building regulations. Not all spaces can be lit up in the same way, for functional reasons; the amount of light required varies depending on the kind of activity that will take place in the space, as well as for aesthetic and emotional reasons. The emotional component of lighting is very important for the success of a project, in some spaces more than others. Lighting standards do not provide us with the information we need to create involving, emotional lighting; they simply list the minimum levels of maintained lighting, of uniformity, the values we need to comply with to control glare, and the minimum chromatic yield. It’s true that if these standards are not met, this will have an effect on the mood of the people occupying the spaces; but they can by no means be used as guidelines for emotional design.
