Abstract

Famous icon of Italian rationalism, the Novocomum (1927-1930) by Giuseppe Terragni also represents an emblematic case in the material history of twentieth century architecture from the planning and constructive process made of rethinking and continuous updates. The reconstruction of the building process is an essential procedure of the construction history, studied in subsequent modifications, transformations, restorations. The reading and comparison of the materials conserved in the Terragni’s archive - in addition to the iconographic documents repeatedly published, many unpublished: correspondence, notes, technical drawings, reports, calculations, photographs of the building process, etc. - and in many other public and private archives has clarified the reasons and conditions that led to the current conditions. To systematize the complexity of heterogeneous data, was born the idea of returning through the graphic representation of the construction of this architecture, giving an innovative dimension to the knowledge that comes from archival and bibliographic research, reflecting in depth on the times and methods of construction of structures and transformation of finishes. Starting from the analysis and redesigning of the project documentation, compared with the direct survey, it had been possible to elaborate drawings, together with conceptual schemes and a digital model, favoring the axonometric restitution, which allowed to investigate and show the parts of which they are composed, their reciprocal connections, the original characters and the current complexity of the Novocomum: a 'represented' materiality that should favor the safeguarding and maintenance process.
