The Alpine territories show a strong potential in reaching the targets set out by the European policies related to smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. The present paper reflects about the role of cultural heritage in supporting local development process in mountain areas. In particular, Valle d’Aosta castles’ system (Italy) is considered in the study, with particular reference to the analysis of the opportunities and the risks of the regional development.
