Abstract

Since its origin, the concept of matter has been intimately connected to architecture themes. The meaning of the term matter has been widely investigated in the history of philosophical and scientific thought. Even before indicating the undifferentiated primordial substance from which it is generated, the multiplicity of the real world was etymologically linked to the Greek concept of ὕλη. This comes from the original meaning of “woodland”, the primary building material in primitive societies. It then became referred to the Latin māter, which meant ‘trunk of the tree’ (from which the branches develop). The Aristotelian view of quality of life, as the result of a plurality of experiences, determines how space expresses itself and is experienced in the dialectic between the immateriality of meaning and materiality of place. To a concept of quality that can be pursued and verified through the scientific assessment of data and the progressive process of artificialisation of nature. Contemporary architecture counterposes a new language, based on compositional and technical harmony, on the appropriateness of construction processes and on aesthetic awareness. Architecture changes the value of time from an objective variable to a subjective element: it is through architecture that time is articulated, recognised and lived.
