Abstract The contribution shows the project of adaptation and transformation of the building of the former Hospital of city of Lecco, built on a project by Giuseppe Bovara from 1843, and converted into the new seat of the Municipality in 1926-28. The building had remained in use as a hospital until the end of the nineteenth century, when due to lack of space, it was decided to build a new hospital in another part of the city. The edifice was thus purchased by the Municipality in 1900 and used as the seat of the Court and of the Lecco Public Prosecutor's Office. With the political-administrative reorganization of 1923, the City of Lecco merged several municipalities in the district, and the consequent increase in the number of inhabitants made it necessary to find a new arrangement adequate to the increased need for space in the municipal administration offices. It was therefore decided to transfer the seat from Palazzo Ghislanzoni to the former hospital building. The transformations made to house the offices of the Municipality (which are still located there) involved an important transformation and expansion project, developed by the engineer of the Municipality's technical office, Iosto Braccioni on the palazzo Bovara (so called today). The intervention is illustrated on a series of unpublished drawings that reflect the changes that led to the current volumetric layout of the building. The project is also significant as regards the professional role played by the municipal engineer within the technical-administrative apparatus where, as in other Italian cities in the same period, the municipal engineer also dealt with more peculiar project issues of the architect, such as in the case of the enlargement/restoration of the former Hospital, together with the main urban and infrastructural works that were started in the Thirties in the city of Lecco. In this sense occurs the mixture and contraposition between the professional skills of the engineer and those of the architect that led to the issuance of the decree 23/10/1925, n. 2537, that established the separation between the respective and specific professional competences.
