Architectural Walks in Milan

Why talk about churches and why move between modernity and contemporaneity? First of all because of a personal interest that has made this issue one of my favored research fields, in which to address a kind of architecture that finds its most profound logic in being a place of representation. A kind of architecture that must be, in fact, a place of identification of an entire community and that must carry out the construction of a space that is home to all people as well as to God, whatever the sense that our personal sensibilities attach to this idea. The sacred space is always, for this reason, an extremely difficult design exercise, which does not allow for shortcuts. When a designer realizes a church there is no easy way out: he or she must succeed in giving shape to their own idea of sacred space that is in some way acceptable to all. This is precisely where the interest resides, in proceeding to explore this subject for which the Milan itinerary was created, entitled “Churches and Modernity.”

Perché parlare di chiese e perché muoversi tra modernità e contemporaneità? Innanzitutto per un interesse personale che ha fatto di questo tema un mio campo di ricerca privilegiato, dove confrontarsi con un’architettura che trova la sua logica più profonda nell’essere un luogo di rappresentazione. Un’architettura che deve essere, infatti, luogo di identificazione di un’intera comunità e deve assolvere alla costruzione di uno spazio che sia la casa di tutti gli uomini così come di Dio, qualsiasi sia l’accezione che il nostro sentire personale attribuisce a questa idea. Quello dello spazio sacro è sempre, perciò, un esercizio di progettazione difficilissimo, che non concede scappatoie. Quando un progettista realizza una chiesa non ha scampo: deve riuscire a dare forma ad una propria idea di spazio sacro che sia in qualche modo accettabile da tutti. Proprio qui risiede l’interesse di andare ad esplorare questo tema per il quale è stato realizzato il percorso milanese intitolato Chiese e modernità.
