sonic testing is a Non-Destructive Technique (NDT) that is used for studying the characteristics of single fairly homogeneous materials and composite structures. If properly applied to, and with the right configurations, this technique allows detecting material variations, cracks and other discontinuities. Since many years, this technology is used on masonry structures, mostly to quantify the compactness of the material through its thickness using direct configurations. The joints, either dry or filled in with mortar, have an important effect on the propagation of the sonic waves, changing the velocities and detecting, indirectly, the influence of these discontinuities on the mechanical characteristics of the masonry. This work presents the results of sonic direct and sonic echo tests conducted on individual stones and triplets with dry and lime mortar joints to assess the reliability of the technique to detect the influence of the joints on the propagation of sonic waves.

Abstract

sonic testing is a Non-Destructive Technique (NDT) that is used for studying the characteristics of single fairly homogeneous materials and composite structures.
