A new synthesis of gamma-lactones by peroxydisulfate oxidation of aliphatic carboxylic acids in the presence of olefins is described. From a synthetic point of view the method is an alternative to those based on the oxidation of the same acids by metal ions, such as Mn(III), Ce(IV), and Pb(IV), with the advantage of using a more readily available and less expensive oxidant.

Abstract

A new synthesis of gamma-lactones by peroxydisulfate oxidation of aliphatic carboxylic acids in the presence of olefins is described.
